Bizarre items including Lego pieces, a TV set and a plastic chicken are
among the tonnes of litter washed up on our beaches, a massive coastal
clean-up exercise has revealed.
Activists ? highlighting the mounting crisis of plastic pollution ?
collected a staggering 25 tonnes of marine litter from beaches around
Britain, including a record haul in North Cornwall, with supporters
bagging the weight equivalent of 833,333 one litre plastic bottles.
Green campaigners in the region say the vast amounts of discarded
packaging floating around the world?s seas and oceans is a growing
threat to marine animals who are regularly washed up dead with stomachs
full of plastic.
Also among the vast collection of deadly flotsam were of sea-themed Lego
pieces washed off a container ship in 1997, a TV set and a plastic
chicken in Perranporth.
Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), the Cornish campaign group who
co-ordinated the operation, has described the sheer scale of the
pollution as ?jaw dropping?.
