A creative campaign to clean the oceans

What would you name the vortex of rubbish in the Pacific Ocean, also
called the 8th continent? And did you know that every square kilometre
of the ocean contains 18 000 plastic particles?

An innovative campaign by UNA Finland is highlighting the fact that
everyone is affected by plastic waste in our oceans.

The campaign, launched in January, has received a positive response. The
campaign website features a quiz on sustainable development and a
petition for a global treaty on plastic waste ? which will be available
in English soon. UNA Finland is also asking people to suggest a name for
the ?8th continent?, the vortex of rubbish. ?We are trying to show the
ways people can take part in the UN processes?, says Helena Laukko,
director of UNA Finland.

The campaign is linked to the discussion on sustainable development and
the post-2015 development agenda. ?We hope the new development goals
will be universal sustainable development goals?, says Laukko. ?For the
campaign we were looking for a topic that would touch people in Finland,
in Europe, in the developing countries and everywhere. Plastic waste is
a problem clearly beyond nation-state borders?, she adds.
