Marine Debris Clean-up

Marine Debris Clean-up, Research and Education Programs:

Marine Debris Clean-up, Research, and Education: The Sitka Sound Science
Center has been involved in Marine Debris research, cleanup, and
outreach since our inception. We have partnered with the F/V Cherokee
and the Marine Conservation Alliance who have been cleaning Sitka area
beaches of marine debris since 2008. Together we have removed over
80,000 pounds of marine debris from the Southeast outer coast. This year
we have two separate Marine Debris projects ongoing: a grant from the
Alaska Marine Stewardship Foundation (formerly MCAF) to focus on tsunami
debris cleanup of the Kruzof Island area and a 3 year project with the
National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration to both remove
marine debris created by the Tohoku earthquake and work with community
partners on marine debris projects.

These videos were funded by the Alaska Conservation Foundation, filmed
by Ben Hamilton of Pioneer Videography, with production help by Margot
O?Connell, Sitka Sound Science Center Marine Debris Coordinator. The
Sitka Sound Science Center has created these three 1 minute ?shorts?
highlighting the role individuals play in reducing marine debris. The
project is called ?A Drop in the Bucket, Every Drop Counts!? A ?drop?
refers to water, debris, and individual action. The videos are shown
during daily tours of the SSSC and distributed over the internet and
broadcast media. The intent is to reach a broad audience that includes
people who would not have had an opportunity to consider their role in
marine debris and inspire that audience to take action to reduce marine
debris.
