• What is the main mission of One Earth – One Ocean e.V. (oeoo)?
We at One Earth – One Ocean are people who actively shape a clean environment. Our core goal is to free waters worldwide from plastic waste, oil and chemicals with the concept of “Maritime Waste Disposal”.
• How big is the problem of marine pollution that oeoo is addressing?
Every year, more than 10 million tons of waste enter the world’s oceans.
• Where does the majority of ocean waste come from?
Up to 80% of the waste that reaches the oceans originates on land. Around 25% of this waste consists of plastic.
• How much plastic waste is currently estimated to be in the world’s oceans?
Already today, more than 150 million tons of plastic waste are in the oceans worldwide.
• What alarming long-term forecast exists regarding plastic waste in the sea?
According to UN studies, by 2050 the total weight of plastic waste could exceed that of fish in the world’s oceans.
• How long does plastic waste persist in the environment and why is it dangerous?
Plastic waste can last up to 450 years and enters our food chain as microplastics via fish consumption. This harms the ecosystem and ultimately humans.
• How does plastic pollution affect marine animals each year?
More than one million seabirds and 100,000 other marine animals die every year because they mistake plastic for food or become entangled in it.
• What is the key strategy oeoo has developed to combat pollution?
oeoo has developed the concept of “Maritime Waste Disposal” to free waters worldwide from plastic waste, oil and chemicals.
• In how many countries is oeoo actively working?
oeoo is currently active in 8 countries with 14 cleanup units (as of 2025) — including Panama, Uganda, Egypt, Europe, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
• Where are the main offices of One Earth – One Ocean e.V. located?
The association is based in Munich and has offices in Kiel, as well as international offices in Phnom Penh and Manila.
• What specific cleanup vessels does oeoo deploy?
SeeHamster, SeeKuh, and in planning SeeElefant.
• Does oeoo also focus on environmental education?
Yes, oeoo provides educational work in Europe and in all countries where the organization operates.
• How can individuals support oeoo financially?
Through membership with an annual supporting contribution or through donations.
• What are examples of awareness campaigns by oeoo?
Since 2014, oeoo has used creative campaigns such as the song “A Million Miles Away” or the theater play Equilibrium to raise awareness about the plastic waste issue.
