International Coastal Cleanup (ICC): A success at World Cleanup Day 2023

At 15. and September 16, 2023, it was that time again: World Cleanup Day called on people around the world to work together for a cleaner environment. One of the standout events was the International Coastal Cleanup, where we cleaned up the coasts and made a positive contribution to environmental protection.

Registrations for ICC 2023 went extremely well and we were overwhelmed by the support of the community. With more than 1,000 participants, including many students, this year’s event was an impressive success.

On September 15, almost 40 clean-up campaigns took place on all beaches and shore areas of the Kiel Fjord as well as on inner-city parking areas: The largest action this year was in Schilksee with 150 pupils from the elementary school there alone. These young environmentalists showed their commitment and willingness to actively do something for the environment.

In preparation for the ICC – as in previous years – oeoo speakers were out and about in local schools, preparing for the collection events with workshops, lectures and interactive author readings. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to our sponsor Stadtwerke Kiel AG, who made the activities financially possible.

On September 16, the divers of the SDA (Scientific Diving Association e.V. Kiel) took part in an additional action. They went to the Blücherbrücke quay line to ensure cleanliness under water. Their work underwater is critical to doing justice to our oceans and coasts.

We would like to thank all the participants and volunteers who collected litter and worked to protect the environment on the occasion of World Cleanup Day 2023. Your dedication and determination are a shining example of the positive change each of us can make.

World Cleanup Day 2023 was another step toward a cleaner and healthier environment, and the ICC made a significant contribution.

We are thrilled with the community support and outreach and are already looking forward to next year’s ICC. Together, we can make the world a cleaner place and protect our environment.
