Industrial pellets were found in 22.8% of our samples, and accounted for 28.1% of all the plastic pieces found. Industrial pellets tended to be larger than pieces of user plastic and accounted for 40.2% of total plastic weight. These industrial pellets were significantly smaller than those found in other species, suggesting either that Cassin&#8217;s Auklets selected smaller plastic particles or that plastic was retained in ventriculi and worn down. <p>Marine litter has become a major issue that cannot be ignored, according<br />

A BRIGHT AND LETHAL TIDE

Studying Plastic Ingestion by Seabirds on Lord Howe Island

The turboprop aircraft begins its descent, dipping below a thin veil of
cumulus clouds. I press my head against the window, searching for land,
but only see the blue expanse of the Tasman Sea. Then the plane turns,
revealing a crescent-shaped island with steep volcanic peaks and
turquoise-tinted coral reef lagoons. I?ve arrived at Lord Howe Island,
commonly touted as ?paradise on earth? or ?Australia?s crown jewel.? It
lives up to its reputation, too, with its stunning outcrops and a rare
coral reef system ? the southernmost coral reef in the world. But I?m
not here to lap up the scenery or to partake in normal tourist
activities like scuba diving, kayaking or hiking. Instead I?ve come to
learn about the flesh-footed shearwater (Puffinus carneipes), the
largest ?muttonbird? to breed on Lord Howe Island, and to understand why
shearwater chicks wash up (or ?wreck?) on the island?s coastlines every
year.

I first meet Dr. Jennifer Lavers, a slender, fair-haired Canadian with

Commissioned by the Netherlands Ministry of Infrastructure and the
Environment, IMARES has published its new monitoring report on
quantities of plastics in stomachs of Northern Fulmars found on Dutch
beaches up to year 2013.

The added two years of data suggest a decrease in quantities of
plastics, but are not significant over the past ten years. Currently,
94% of investigated stomachs of Dutch Fulmars contained one or more
plastic particles, and about 52% contained more than the critical level
of 0.1 gram plastic. North Sea governments have set a policy target
where this percentage is reduced to below 10%.

Beached Northern Fulmars, Great Shearwaters, Sooty Shearwaters and Cory?s Shearwaters are found on Sable Island, Nova Scotia, Canada regularly, and they can be used to assess plastic pollution. All species except Cory?s Shearwaters contained plastic debris in their gastrointestinal tracts. Northern Fulmars, Sooty Shearwaters and Great Shearwaters all showed high prevalence of plastic ingestion (&#62;72%), with Northern Fulmars having the highest number and mass of plastics among the species examined. There was no difference in plastic ingestion between sexes or age classes. In all species user plastics made up the majority of the pieces found, with industrial pellets representing only a small proportion in the samples. Sable Island could be an important monitoring site for plastic pollution in Atlantic Canada. and Cory?s Shearwaters are found on Sable Island, Nova Scotia, Canada
regularly, and they can be used to assess plastic pollution. All species
except Cory?s Shearwaters contained plastic debris in their
gastrointestinal tracts. Northern Fulmars, Sooty Shearwaters and Great
Shearwaters all showed high prevalence of plastic ingestion (&gt;72%), with
Northern Fulmars having the highest number and mass of plastics among
the species examined. There was no difference in plastic ingestion
between sexes or age classes. In all species user plastics made up the
majority of the pieces found, with industrial pellets representing only
a small proportion in the samples. Sable Island could be an important
monitoring site for plastic pollution in Atlantic Canada.
