Lunardi had been in the habit of cleaning up litter by himself. ?I felt weird telling people I picked up rubbish,? he says. ?But then I realised: ?No, I think they?re weird not picking up rubbish?.?</p>

Plastic pollution in our waterways is getting worse fast. More and more
citizens are cleaning beaches, but can we stop litter at the source?

NICKO Lunardi, from Newport, is wearing a black t-shirt with two skulls
on it. He is 27 years old, an electrician, and a drummer in two punk
bands. He?s also the leader of a small group of volunteer beach cleaners
in Melbourne?s west.

It?s Sunday morning and a dozen people have slipped through a gap in the

The world's largest collection of marine debris information has
identified Australia's coastal rubbish is mainly plastic from Australian
sources.

In a report released today, CSIRO scientist Denise Hardesty says her
team surveyed sites approximately every 100 km along the Australian
coastline.

?We found about three-quarters of the rubbish along the coast is
plastic,? she says. ?Most is from Australian sources, not the high seas,
with debris concentrated near cities.?

She says the density of plastic in Australian waters ranges from a few
thousand pieces of plastic per square kilometre to more than 40,000 pieces.</pre>

The oceans are full of our plastic ? here?s what we can do about it

The Australian government has a ?threat abatement plan? which aims to
save marine animals from being harmed by rubbish. We set out to inform
this plan by developing a better understanding of where exactly this
rubbish comes from and how exactly it harms wildlife.

We surveyed the entire Australian coast at 100 km intervals, with help
from school groups and citizen scientists. We found that our shorelines
are littered with debris. About three-quarters of it is plastic and,
although there are some large items, 95% of the items are just a few
centimetres across, or smaller.

In Australian waters, you can expect to find anything from a few
thousand to more than 40,000 pieces of plastic per square kilometre.

We know that Australia?s waters contain lots of tiny pieces of plastic,
and that these pieces can harm many marine species. But in new research
published today we show that these microplastics are also home to marine
life, some of which could be helping to clean up the oceans.

In earlier research reported on The Conversation we found Australia?s
waters contain around 4,000 plastic pieces per square kilometre.

Since then we?ve been looking at the tiny lifeforms found on tiny
plastic, in the first Australian study of its kind. Our results are
published today in PLOS ONE and data repository Figshare.</pre>

In New South Wales, divers in the Hastings River removed shopping trolleys, mobile phones and a scooter, while Tasmania?s Derwent River yielded bicycles, car batteries and even furniture. It?s a reminder that individual actions can have dramatic impacts underwater, especially when we normally have no way of seeing it. Nobody knows that better than the indigenous people who live on the Gulf of Carpentaria and Torres Strait, the parts of Australia most affected by drifting ghost nets. Lost or abandoned from fishing vessels, ghost nets can be up to 6 kilometres long and are known to kill more than 200 species of marine animals and birds. They also damage culturally and biologically significant reefs, and can be hazardous to the small boats typically used by indigenous people.</p>

With more than half a million people participating in last Sunday?s
Clean Up Australia Day, it?s perhaps not surprising that some odd
objects came to light. Not all the rubbish was on land, and not all the
rubbish was what you might normally expect to find in the water.

In New South Wales, divers in the Hastings River removed shopping
trolleys, mobile phones and a scooter, while Tasmania?s Derwent River
yielded bicycles, car batteries and even furniture. It?s a reminder that
individual actions can have dramatic impacts underwater, especially when
we normally have no way of seeing it.

Nobody knows that better than the indigenous people who live on the Gulf
of Carpentaria and Torres Strait, the parts of Australia most affected

Study finds more reason to review the use of BPA in Australia

A new study provides further evidence of the damaging effects of BPA,
the controversial compound used in the manufacture of plastic food and
drink containers that is banned in most parts of the world but allowed
in Australia.

Deakin University scientists are part of the international research team
led by Professor Vincent Laudet at the Institute of Functional Genomics
of Lyon (ENS de Lyon, CNRS, France) that has discovered a new pathway
for bisphenol A (BPA) to spread through the body via a protein known as
ERRy (estrogen-related receptor), which plays an important role in
metabolism. The involvement of ERRy adds weight to the possibility that

Remote marine debris clean-up LIVE now.

The South West Marine Debris Clean-up is an annual event run by Matt
Dell and a wonderful bunch of volunteers. For more than a decade now
they have been the guardians of Tasmania's remote south west beaches as
rubbish washes up beyond the gaze of civilisation. The Bookend Trust has
supported the clean-up over many years now, including by producing the
awards winning Plastic Shoreline documentary and blogging the journey
since 2011. As our southern season turns colder and the days draw short,
