		<title>Beach cleanup campaign with multinational helpers in Greece</title>

					<description><![CDATA[<p>In the beginning of the year 2021 our four big beach cleanups were so successful, mainly with the participation of traveling campers from Germany, Holland and Switzerland, that another beach cleanup took place on March 21st 2021. This time Tina and Ralf from oeoo and the Greek organization Save your Hood organized a cleanup on a large stretch of beach outside of Kalamata. By the way, the two have hit the bill and were able to encourage helpers from the travelers&#8216; camp. In addition to some camper vans, globetrotting sailors participated in this cleanup, too. With the support of Save your Hood, many Greeks were able to take part in this action. Safe your Hood (Neighborhood) is an organization platform of Greek members, who quickly and easily arrange to meet via Facebook, to carry out a cleanup twice a week in the regional area of a city. Save your Hood has so far collected 2.9 million bags of rubbish and plastic waste in almost 1.000 campaigns with 9.500 volunteers in 138 Greek regions. Hence it was inevitable that Tina and Ralf from oeoo and Save your Hood planned a common cause on 03/21/21. If cleanups are performed regularly, several times a week in each regional unit, not only the long-term success is guaranteed, but also the ongoing motivation of the activists. <p>A very special day, because a multinational team of 30 environmental activists and environmental friends from Greece, Germany, Austria and Holland joined up. They collected 40 large bags of plastic waste (95% only small parts) in only 2 hours on a four kilometers long beach. Grave, Three-dimensional distribution of anthropogenic microparticles in the body of sandy beaches Science of The Total Environment, Volumes 628–629, 2018, Pages 1340-1351, ISSN 0048-9697, Abstract: External oceanographic conditions rather than anthropogenic influence are shown to cause the 3-dimensional distribution of anthropogenic microparticles (MP, 0.5–5mm) within the body of sandy beaches of a non-tidal sea with strong wind/wave climate and seasonal sea level variations (the Baltic Sea). A patchy structure is confirmed in all three dimensions, with background concentrations of several tens of MP items per kg of dry sample weight versus peaking spots with several hundreds of items per kg dry weight. The background MP concentrations are of the same order of magnitude for the beach surface, beach body, and sands of underwater coastal slopes, highlighting that the contaminated by MPs sand cover of the entire sea coastal zone is one single entity, repeatedly re-distributed between its underwater and beach parts by every next storm. Peaking concentrations are related to stormy events and places with stronger water dynamics, and are associated with locations of coarser sands within the beach body and wracklines at the beach surface. This suggests that marine waters are the source of anthropogenic microparticles for the beach, and not vice versa. The prevalence of wave-driven over wind-driven beaching mechanism for MPs extracted from the beach samples is confirmed by the flotation tests. Size distribution of the extracted MPs is found to be similar to that obtained for plastics floating at the ocean surface. Such a coherency for different oceanic environments speaks in favor of independence of general fragmentation processes on the particular external conditions, shifting the attention to the fragmentation process and material properties of synthetic particles in marine environment.
