					<description><![CDATA[<p>Nachdem die bisherigen 4 großen Beach Clean-up&#8217;s im jungen Jahr unter hauptsächlicher Beteiligung von reisenden Wohnmobilisten aus Deutschland, Holland und der Schweiz so erfolgreich waren, hat am 21.03.21 wieder ein Beach Clean-up stattgefunden. Diesmal haben Tina und Ralf von OEOO ein Clean-up gemeinsam mit der griechischen Organisation Save your Hood einen großen Strandabschnitt außerhalb von Kalamata organisiert und durchgeführt. Nebenbei haben die beiden die Werbetrommel gerührt und noch zusätzlich Helfer aus dem Lager der Reisenden animieren können mitzumachen. Neben einigen Wohnmobilisten haben diesmal auch Weltreisende Segler teilgenommen. Durch Save your Hood konnten bei diesem Clean-up auch viele Griechen teilnehmen. Safe your Hood (Neighbourhood) ist eine Organisationsplattform von griechischen Mitgliedern die sich schnell und unkompliziert über Facebook verabreden um durchschnittlich 2 mal pro Woche im regionalen Umfeld einer Stadt einen Clean-up durchzuführen. Save your Hood hat bisher in knapp 1.000 Aktionen mit 9.500 Volontären 2,9 Millionen Säcke Müll und Plastikmüll in 138 griechischen Regionen gesammelt. Es lag somit nahe das Tina und Ralf von OEOO und Save your Hood am 21.03.21 eine gemeinsame Sache machten. Ein besonderer Tag denn es versammelte sich ein multinationales Team von 30 Umweltaktivisten und Umweltfreunden aus Griechenland, Deutschland, Österreich und Holland. In nur 2 Stunden haben sie 40 große Säcke Plastikmüll (95 % nur Kleinstteile) an einem 4 Kilometer langen Naturstrand gesammelt. Der Abtransport wird nach einer kurzen telefonischen Info durch die örtlichen Behörden organisiert. Schaut euch das Video dazu an: &#160; Eine wertvolle Erfahrung hieraus war, dass man nicht unbedingt einen kompletten Tag ansetzen muss. Wenn Cleanups regelmäßig mehrmals pro Woche in jeder regionalen Einheit durchgeführt werden dann ist nicht nur der dauerhafte Erfolg gewährleistet sondern auch die anhaltenden Motivation der Aktivisten am Ball zu bleiben. Die Teilnehmer von Save your Hood haben sich über die Unterstützung durch OEOO sehr gefreut und waren hochmotiviert darüber das ihr Engagement so sehr geschätzt wird. Ein großartiger Tag im Einsatz für unsere Ozeane und unsere Umwelt!</p>

On October 24, 162 fourth and fifth graders raced across a beautiful
wooden bridge, arching over the Anacostia River, excited to participate
in hands-on environmental activities.

The NOAA Marine Debris Program was one of many Debris Day educators at
Washington D.C.?s Kingman Island on Friday. Organized by Living
Classrooms, this year?s Debris Day, which included cleaning trash from
the park, was a huge success, bringing in more organizations and more
students than previous years. The students spent the day rotating
through nine different stations, laughing, learning, and playing the
whole time.</pre>

ABSTRACT
A wealth of environmental and ecological questions are answered with the
help of citizen scientists of all ages, but schoolchildren (&lt;18 years)
rarely participate in these projects. This is surprising considering
that many citizen science projects would ideally complement modern
school curricula, ranging from science, to math, reading and arts. Here
we present a citizen science project supported by schoolchildren who
investigate the problem of marine litter along the Chilean coast.
Schoolchildren received specially designed education materials,
carefully tested instructions and sampling kits. Wherever possible they
were accompanied by recent university graduates, who supported the

February 21, 2014 by NOAA Marine Debris Program By: Andrea Kealoha Innovative solutions are borne through inspiration, teamwork, and an attitude that combines friendly competition with mutual gain. These core values were at play last fall when 15 fun-loving and highly motivated fourth and fifth graders from Kea&#38;rsquo;au Elementary School on the Big Island won a 3rd place prize for their marine debris solution in a FIRST&#38;reg;LEGO&#38;reg; League (FFL) competition. The students, part of the elementary school&#38;rsquo;s LunaTechs robotics team, participated in the 2013 NATURE&#38;rsquo;S FURY Challenge, where over 200,000 children from over 70 countries were challenged to develop an innovative solution that helps communities prepare, stay safe, or rebuild after a natural disaster. The team chose to focus on marine debris generated from tsunamis, a natural disaster that Hawaii has experienced in the past. As part of their initial research, the LunaTechs visited the Pacific Tsunami Center in Hilo and the Department of Civil Defense. They also participated in beach cleanups, collecting debris from Waiolena and Wai&#38;#699;uli Beach Parks. Through these events, the LunaTechs became particularly interested in the threats associated with marine debris carrying invasive species.</p>

Innovative solutions are borne through inspiration, teamwork, and an
