The pleasure came from meeting with an \ninternational coalition of groups all devoted to solving the marine \neco-disaster that is plastic pollution. The pain came from being trapped \nin a hotel looking at an ocean that I desperately wanted to swim \nin\u2013after all, that\u2019s why I do what I do; I love being in the ocean. \nInside, marathon meetings were norm, working roughly 12 hour days trying \nto build a global framework for dealing with upstream sources of plastic \npollution. Topics included emerging technologies\u2013 incineration, cradle \nto cradle recycling, community engagement and plastic to fuel processing.\n\nWhat was missing was a conversation on source reductions\u2013 that is, as \nglobal society, using less plastic. One of the largest issues we face \nwith persistent plastic pollution is that we keep using more of it, \ndespite new technologies aimed at dealing with it, end of life. Every \nyear, more ends up in the environment, and it doesn\u2019t go away. As an \nNGO, or as environmentalists in general, we\u2019re often accused of being \nanti-business. Being considered pro-business, as of now, means being \npro-business as status quo. In a breakout session, David Osborn, UNEP\u2019s \nCoordinator for Ecosystems Management played devil\u2019s advocate asking the \nquestion to stakeholders, \u201cWhy would industry want to be a part of The \nMarine Litter Partnership?\u201d Indeed, the very partnership we were all \nthere to build a framework for. But the problem with this exercise is \nthat it\u2019s predicated on the fact that industry is fueled by growth, and \nif you make plastic, that means you need to make and sell more. I\u2019m \nafraid that where we are right now is already over the edge to some \ndegree\u2013 we can\u2019t necessarily worry about the health and welfare of a \npolluting industry over the damage done to the environment. Plastic is a \ngreat material, but single-use plastic is a huge area of growth for the \nindustry, and I\u2019m afraid that we need to see business get worse for \nthese producers, not better if we\u2019re going to begin to tackle this \nproblem. If you\u2019re trying to support industry growth and keep plastic \nout of the environment, you\u2019ve got a contradiction in terms with the \nexisting mechanisms we have for stopping pollution.
