The increasing importance of sustainability promotes the<br \/>\ndevelopment of bio-based and biodegradable polymers, sometimes misleadingly referred to as \u2018bioplastics\u2019. Because both terms imply<br \/>\n\u201cgreen\u201d sources and \u201cclean\u201d removal, this paper aims at critically discussing the sometimes-conflicting terminology as well as renewable<br \/>\nsources with a special focus on the degradation of these polymers innatural environments.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to the former we review innovations in feedstock development (e.g. microalgae and food wastes).
