Recently, the Contracting Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) recognized this site as an Ecologically or Biologically Significant Area (EBSA). The research aim was to quantify the abundance of marine litter and its impact on benthic fauna. Litter density ranged from 0 items/100 m2 to 14.02 items/100 m2 with a mean (±standard error) of 2.13 (±0.84) items/100 m2. The observed average density was higher (5.2 items/100 m2) at depths &#62;100 m than at shallower depths (&#60;100 m, 0.71 items/100 m2). Lost or abandoned fishing lines contributed to 98.07% of the overall litter density, then representing the dominant source of marine debris. Litter interactions with fauna were frequently observed, with 30% of litter causing “entanglement/coverage” and 15% causing damage to sessile fauna. A total of 16 species showed interaction (entanglement/coverage or damage) with litter items and 12 of these are species of conservation concern according to international directives and agreements (CITES, Berne Convention, Habitat Directive, SPA/BD Protocol, IUCN Red List); we also observed 7 priority habitats of the SPA/BD Protocol. This research will support the implementation of monitoring “Harm” as recommended by the UN Environment/MAP Regional Plan on Marine Litter Management in the Mediterranean, and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). Derelict fishing gear has been found to produce several harmful environmental and ecological effects, however socioeconomic consequences have been investigated less frequently. We analyze the economic effects of a substantial derelict pot removal program in the largest estuary of the United States, the Chesapeake Bay. By combining spatially resolved data on derelict pot removals with commercial blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) harvests and effort, we show that removing 34,408 derelict pots led to significant gains in gear efficiency and an additional 13,504 MT in harvest valued at US $21.3 million—a 27% increase above that which would have occurred without removals. Model results are extended to a global analysis where it is seen that US $831 million in landings could be recovered annually by removing less than 10% of the derelict pots and traps from major crustacean fisheries. Every year, millions of pots and traps are lost in crustacean fisheries<br />
around the world. Derelict fishing gear has been found to produce<br />
several harmful environmental and ecological effects, however<br />
socioeconomic consequences have been investigated less frequently. We<br />
analyze the economic effects of a substantial derelict pot removal<br />
program in the largest estuary of the United States, the Chesapeake Bay.<br />
By combining spatially resolved data on derelict pot removals with<br />
commercial blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) harvests and effort, we show<br />
that removing 34,408 derelict pots led to significant gains in gear<br />
efficiency and an additional 13,504 MT in harvest valued at US $21.3<br />
million—a 27% increase above that which would have occurred without<br />
removals. Model results are extended to a global analysis where it is<br />
seen that US $831 million in landings could be recovered annually by<br />
removing less than 10% of the derelict pots and traps from major<br />
crustacean fisheries. An unfortunate common pool externality, the<br />
degradation of marine environments is detrimental not only to marine<br />
organisms and biota, but also to those individuals and communities whose<br />
livelihoods and culture depend on profitable and sustainable marine<br />
resource use.</p>

Xixová-Japuí State Park (XJSP), that has 3,48 square mile, is located on
the west side of Santos Bay, in São Vicente, SP, and, even being a
Protect Area, don't escape of dangers caused by lost net fishings. Many
of them ? that coming adrift -, or even those set illegally, are removed
by manager, Paulo Menna, and the contributors of XJSP in a constant work.

Clandestines net fishings are usually set at night, since the place is a
fishing exclusion area. Most presents a medium to high weariness stage,
still with fishes, turtles and others foulings, but net fishings with
little use are also found. All of them are collected and stored in safe
place, waiting for recycling.

Adriatic Sea a pioneer in the Mediterranean region for recovery and
reuse of fishing nets

With the Italian Port of Ancona promoted as national ?collection point?
and trawl vessels becoming involved for the benefit of the environment,
the Adriatic Sea becomes a pioneer throughout the Mediterranean for the
recovery and regeneration of abandoned fishing nets lying on the seabed.

This initiative is made possible thanks to a unique partnership between
researchers, divers, fishing industry operators, NGOs, local governments
and industry, presented today during a formal kick-off by the two
promoters: the DeFishGear project and Healthy Seas. The DeFishGear
project is funded by the EU-IPA Adriatic cross-border programme, and

No, ghost fishing has nothing to do with ghostbusters flicking fishing
rods from a boat.

But what is ghost fishing? It?s a not-at-all-supernatural phenomenon
that occurs when lost or discarded fishing gear remains in the ocean and
continues doing what it was made to do: catch fish. These nets and traps
haunt the many types of marine life unlucky enough to become snared in
them. That includes species of turtles, fish, sharks, lobsters, crabs,
seabirds, and marine mammals.

NOAA removes 57 tons of marine debris from Northwestern Hawaiian Islands

A team of 17 NOAA divers sailing aboard NOAA Ship Oscar Elton Sette has
returned from a 33-day mission to remove marine debris from
Papah?naumoku?kea Marine National Monument in Hawaii, a World Heritage
Site and one of the largest marine conservation areas in the world.

In total, they removed approximately 57 tons of derelict fishing nets
and plastic litter from the monument?s tiny islands and atolls,
sensitive coral reefs and shallow waters.

?The amount of marine debris we find in this remote, untouched place is
shocking,? said Mark Manuel, operations manager for NOAA Fisheries Coral
Reef Ecosystem Division and chief scientist for the mission. ?Every day,
we pulled up nets weighing hundreds of pounds from the corals. We filled
the dumpster on the Sette to the top with nets, and then we filled the
decks. There?s a point when you can handle no more, but there?s still a
