<p>Take a look in your medicine cabinet or your shower and you?re likely to<br />
find microbeads. Those are the small plastic spheres used as exfoliants<br />
in products like face wash or toothpaste. The tiny beads have been big<br />
news since scientists found them showing up in the Great Lakes several<br />
years ago. Last week, Michigan became the latest state to introduce<br />
legislation that would ban products containing microbeads.</p>
<p>Current State speaks with Melissa Duhaime, a researcher in the<br />
Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of<br />
Michigan. She?s been researching the impact of microplastic pollution in<br />
the Great Lakes.</p>

Plastic Microbeads Pose Severe Risks To Ecosystem When Washed Down The Drain

Oswego, NY ? Standing at The Port of Oswego Marina today in Oswego, U.S.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, joined by Terry Hammil, Port of Oswego
Chairman of the Board, Sarah Eckel with Citizens Campaign for the
Environment, and Oswego Mayor Tom Gillen, urged Congress to pass new
legislation to ban plastic microbeads in personal care products.

Plastic microbeads are found in personal care products like facial
scrubs, body washes, hand cleansers, and toothpaste. These products are
designed to be rinsed down the drain, but the microbeads are too small
to be captured by wastewater treatment plants. They are subsequently
found in large bodies of water, such as the Great Lakes, where they
concentrate toxins and can be ingested by birds and fish, posing serious
environmental and health risks.

Recent reports identified thousands of plastic particles per square

A Better Belle Isle

A portion of shoreline on Belle Isle, Michigan is now free of marine
debris! In 2012, the NOAA Marine Debris Program and the Great Lakes
Restoration Initiative provided funding to the Alliance for the Great
Lakes to tackle the problem of marine debris on this historic island.

Throughout the past two years, the project team has been busy on four
different project components. The removal project helped clean up 200
metric tons of debris, which included concrete slabs, rebar, and other
metal debris.</pre>

Governor Quinn Signs Bill to Ban Microbeads, Protect Illinois Waterways
Illinois Now First State in the Nation to Prevent Use of Personal Care
Products Containing Synthetic Plastics

CHICAGO ? Governor Pat Quinn today signed legislation to make Illinois
the first state in the nation to ban the manufacture and sale of
personal care products containing synthetic plastic microbeads. Today?s
action is part of Governor Quinn?s commitment to protect our natural
resources and ensure a clean and healthy environment for future generations.

?Banning microbeads will help ensure clean waters across Illinois and
set an example for our nation to follow,? Governor Quinn said. ?Lake
Michigan and the many rivers and lakes across our state are among our
most important natural resources. We must do everything necessary to
safeguard them."

Senate Bill 2727, sponsored by State Senator Heather Steans and State
Representative Jaime Andrade Jr., makes Illinois the first state to ban
microbeads in personal care products. The new law will require synthetic
microbeads to be removed from manufacturing by the end of 2018 and bans

The results were compared with those previously determined from Lake Huron, where abundant plastic pellets characterize the southeastern shoreline. Lake Erie and St. Clair shorelines contained some pellets, but were mainly characterized by plastic fragments and intact products, respectively. The potential sources for the pellets include spillage within factories or during transport and off-loading; whereas intact products were derived from urban waste. Once entering the lake environment, low density floating polymers such as polyethylene and polypropylene were degraded by UVB radiation at either the water surface or once deposited on shorelines. Mechanical degradation by wave action and/or sand abrasion fragmented intact products into cm-size particles. Certain textures identified on the surfaces of plastic particles could be related to the nature of the depositional environment. Plastics sampled from infrequently visited muddy, organic-rich shorelines were characterized by more adhering particles and less mechanical pits than those from sandy shorelines. In terms of relative distribution, the Lake St. Clair shoreline contained the least amount of plastic debris of the three lakes. This is a function of the breakwaters and retaining walls built along Lake St. Clair, which replace natural sandy or muddy sinks for floating polymers. This study represents the first detailed record of plastics distribution along multiple, but related fresh water shorelines. Monitoring and Assessment: using standard techniques to measure our progress

How do scientists and policy makers figure out if efforts to prevent 
trash from becoming marine debris are working? Ultimately, to evaluate 
any campaign, or initiative, or policy, we need to see a change in the 
amount of debris washing ashore or a decrease in the number of 
particular items, such as plastic bags, in the marine environment or 
Great Lakes.

This change can be tricky to detect, given that we need a baseline 
understanding of how much and what types of debris are out there in the 
first place. Determining a baseline is not as simple as going to the 
beach once or twice and looking for trash – it requires going back to 
the same spot over time and recording data in the exact same way. We 
also need to know how environmental factors, such as winds and coastal 
currents, impact the way debris moves and builds up on certain shorelines.

To gather this kind of information, the NOAA Marine Debris Program (MDP) 
developed standard techniques for assessing debris on shorelines, on 
water surfaces, at-sea, and in benthic environments, and the guidelines
