MPMD is widely distributed in vast regions of the subtropical gyres and has emerged as a major open ocean pollutant whose distribution is subject to upper ocean turbulence. The models capture shear-driven turbulence, Langmuir turbulence (LT), and enhanced turbulent kinetic energy input due to breaking waves (BWs). Model results are only consistent with observations of MPMD profiles and the relationship between surface concentrations and wind speed if LT effects are included. Neither BW nor shear-driven turbulence is capable of deeply submerging MPMD, suggesting that the observed vertical MPMD distributions are a characteristic signature of wave-driven LT. Thus, this study demonstrates that LT substantially increases turbulent transport in the OSBL, resulting in deep submergence of buoyant tracers. The parametric model is applied to 11 years of observations in the North Atlantic and North Pacific subtropical gyres to show that surface measurements substantially underestimate MPMD concentrations by a factor of 3–13. We?re leaving Pearl and Hermes Atoll for the day and heading over to
Lisianski Island to pick up derelict nets on the shoreline. Nets are
still an entanglement hazard for the Monument?s wildlife even when
they?re on land; it?s not uncommon to see a Hawaiian monk seal lounging
on a large pile of them.</pre>

A few days into operations at Pearl and Hermes Atoll, the marine debris
divers stumbled across three fishing boats from Japan. Similar boats
that were torn away from Japan during the 2011 tsunami have turned up in

Bill by Senators Padilla, De Leon &amp; Lara Would Phase Out Single-Use
Plastic Bags in California

Sacramento ? The State Assembly today approved SB 270 by Senator Alex
Padilla (D-Pacoima), Senator Kevin de Leon (D-Los Angeles) and Senator
Ricardo Lara (D-Huntington Park/Long Beach). The bill would phase out
single-use plastic bags in California grocery stores, convenience
stores, liquor stores and pharmacies. The bill now goes to the State
Senate for consideration.

A coalition of environmental, labor, business groups and local

plastics industry tonight when the State Senate passed SB 270 with a
22-15 vote to ban single-use plastic grocery bags.

Environmental groups and local government advocates have overcome fierce
lobbying by single-use bag manufacturers, intensified in the last few
months of session, to reach this point. Senate Bill 270 by Senators
Padilla, de León and Lara, passed off the California State Assembly

In order to better understand the economic cost of marine debris on coastal communities, the NOAA Marine Debris Program and Industrial Economics, Inc. (IEc) designed a study that examines how marine debris influences people?s decisions to go to the beach and what it may cost them. AUGUST 12, 2014 -- Marine debris has many impacts on the ocean,
