It's renowned for its luxury accommodation, turquoise waters and
breath-taking beaches.
However, these images show the darker side to the Maldives - with huge
amounts of rubbish washed up on the island?s pristine sands.
Award-winning filmmaker Alison Teal, 27, visited Thilafushi ? or Trash
Island - an artificial island created as a municipal landfill situated
to the west of Malé.

We aim to educate school children, local communities and all those whose
lives depend on the Indian Ocean, about the detrimental effects of ghost
nets on the marine system and what can be done to prevent these effects.
By educating and inspiring younger generations, we believe mindsets can
change and new ideas can be born in future years.

Social networks prove a very effective way to reach an audience outside
of our specific region. Utilising these networks can help to promote
worldwide awareness around a problem. Through Facebook, Twitter,
campaigns, reports, and videos we hope to raise our profile and bring
more people together.
