During the summer of 2012 the 5Gyres Institute, along with a group of university researchers and students, conducted the first plastic pollution transect of the Great Lakes aboard the U.S. Brig Niagara. Over the course of four weeks we lived and worked aboard the 200 year old sailing ship, conducting surface trawls and beach transects. The results were shocking, showing us that plastic pollution and micro debris is not limited to the oceans.
